Swedish Criminal Records Extract

In Sweden, the criminal record, officially called Utdrag ur Belastningsregistret or in English Criminal Records Extract, is an official document issued by the Swedish Police Authority. This document is a legal document showing a person’s criminal history in Sweden.

What is a Swedish Criminal Record?

The Swedish criminal record is a comprehensive document that contains a person’s conviction records and suspect records. This document is obtained from the Swedish Police Authority’s central database called Belastningsregistret. The document contains detailed information about crimes committed in Sweden, penalties received, and legal sanctions.

a. Scope and Content of Criminal Record

The Swedish criminal record includes a person’s court decisions, fines, prison sentences, and other legal sanctions. The document may also show crimes committed in another EU country. Records can be kept in the system from 3 years to 20 years depending on the type of crime and the sentence given.

b. Validity Period of the Document

The validity period of the document varies according to its purpose. For example, it has a validity period of 1 year for school and kindergarten employees, 3 months for insurance distribution work, and 6 months for those who will work in nursing homes.

c. Types of Criminal Records

Different types of criminal records are issued in Sweden for different purposes. These include records issued for educational institutions, records issued for overseas use, special purpose records, and records that individuals can obtain to check their own information. Each type of record contains different scope of information and is used for different purposes.

Who Needs Swedish Criminal Records?

Swedish criminal record is an important official document especially for people living abroad who have resided in Sweden for a certain period. This document is frequently requested in international legal proceedings.

a. Visa and Immigration Applicants

People who have lived in Sweden for a certain period and want to migrate to another country may need to submit this document in their immigration applications. Especially in long-term visa applications and residence permit requests, the authorities of the destination country may request a current criminal record from Sweden. This document is of critical importance in terms of showing the applicant’s legal history in Sweden.

b. Citizenship Applicants

Swedish criminal record may be among the mandatory documents for people who have lived in Sweden and are applying for citizenship of a third country. During the citizenship application process, documentation of a person’s legal status in countries where they have previously lived is often requested. This document is important for proving the applicant’s good standing.

c. Those Applying for Work or Education Abroad

People who have resided in Sweden may need to submit criminal records when making job applications or education applications in other countries. This document may be requested especially for positions with high security sensitivity, educational institutions, or public service positions. This document plays an important role in proving the applicant’s reliability and suitability.

d. Those in International Adoption Process

In international adoption process, prospective parents who have lived in Sweden may be asked for criminal records. This document is one of the important documents used in evaluating the suitability of prospective parents during the adoption process. Due to child protection standards, many countries require such documents mandatory in adoption applications.

How to Obtain Swedish Criminal Records?

The process of obtaining Swedish criminal records can be carried out through different methods depending on the applicant’s situation and needs. This process is conducted within the framework of official procedures determined by the Swedish Police Authority.

a. Online Application Process

The Swedish Police Authority accepts criminal record applications through their e-service platform. While this system is primarily designed for residents of Sweden, it can also be used from abroad in some cases. Applicants must have a valid email address and identity verification tools. However, people with protected identity cannot use the online application system.

b. Application Methods from Abroad

For people living abroad, the application process can be carried out by mail or email. Applications are made to the Swedish Police Authority’s Kiruna branch. Application forms can also be filled out in English. Applicants can scan or photograph their completed and wet-signed forms and send them to registerutdrag@polisen.se.

c. Required Documents and Conditions

Basic documents required for application include the application form, copies of passport or ID card. The application form must be signed by hand, and digital signatures are not accepted. Also, applications cannot be made with a power of attorney on behalf of someone else. The application form must be completed with information such as the person’s full name, date of birth, contact information, and purpose of the document.

d. Application Process and Waiting Period

In standard application procedures, preparation and sending of the document takes 2 weeks. However, if the applicant is an EU citizen, the process may take 4 to 21 business days longer as information needs to be requested from the applicant’s country of citizenship. The document is sent by mail to the address specified in the application form. The Swedish Police Authority does not send the document directly to employers or third parties.
